Description

Biology

Numerous breeding migrant. Inhabits the wet meadows in river valleys, near lakes, in marshes on plains and in mountains at altitudes up to 1800-2000 m. More rare lives on the fallow lands and salines close to water. In spring arrives very early, in southern areas appears in mid-end February – March, in northern ones in April by small flocks of two-three dozen birds. At Chokpak Pass latest migrants observed in mid-May. Breeds in separate pairs or in loose colonies of several pairs on one water, often together with other waders, gulls or terns. Nest is located on the shore, island or among the meadow in shallow hole; and is lined by the various amount of dry grass stems and leaves. Clutch of 4 (rare 3) eggs is produced from the end of March – early April in southern areas, and from the end of April in northern ones. Both parents incubate for 24-29 days and care for chicks which hatch from the end of April to June, and begin to fly from early June to mid-July. Broods join to flocks in end June – July. From the northern areas Lapwings fly out until the mid-September, but in southern areas Lapwings gather in huge flocks (sometimes of hundreds or thousands birds) and remain in this condition throughout August, September and first decade of October. Migration in south of Kazakhstan is mainly in September – October. Some birds occur all winter in south from Shymkent.
