Martin Grienenberger author comment · on photo 3 Hello,
I understand that you can be a bit doubtful.
The bird was foraging and slowly disappearing behind the grass that you can see on the picture and didn't reappear. When I realized the bird was disappearing, I took these pictures and this is why they are quite bad... Although, it clearly shows the characteristic features for a Great Snipe. The head is on the left and the bill foraging in the mud.
The combination of all the four pictures show the plumage of a Snipe and the two white wingbars on the coverts are diagnostic of a Great Snipe.
If you're still doubtful about this data, I can provide a description of the bird.
Would it really be a first sighting for Kazakhstan ? Aren't they supposed to be other records from the western part of the country ?

keeps order on the site comment · on photo 3Hello Martin. There have been no reliable finds of Great Snipe in Kazakhstan for a long time, although in the first half of the last century it nested in the valley of the Urals, the Irtysh River. Therefore, there are so many doubts, especially since the photo is not of the best quality. In my opinion, the broad white tips of the wing coverts, as well as the ratio of the length of the tail and flight feathers, are quite suitable for describing the Great Snipe. This will be the first photo of Great Snipe on the Birds of Kazakhstan site. -
Martin Grienenberger author comment · on photo 4 Hello,
I didn't mean any disrespect and I think your feeling comes from the translation. I'm sorry for that but I don't speak Russian ;) I indeed used Google Translation, so there are necessarily mistakes.
I'm happy to learn that this a new species for the website, happy to help !
And thank you for validating these pictures and providing information about the existing data !
