Hey everyone!

A bit about me
- My name is Galym Baitimbet.
- Starting in October I am working on the technical update and development of the site: fixing what is broken and improving what you use every day.
- This diary is here to keep everything in the open: what changes, where to look, and what to do if something does not work.
- Comments under the posts.
- Support email: email@example.invalid.
- Write about anything: what broke, what is inconvenient, what is missing.
- An example helps: which page, what you pressed, on a computer or a phone.
- Photo upload is what people use most.
- In the user survey it came out as one of the biggest bottlenecks: two steps, long waits, hard to find a species.
- So I updated it first.
- Everything is on one page: choose photos, describe them, press "Publish".
- You choose a whole batch of photos at once, not one by one.
- Photos upload in the background while you fill in the details.
- Species are searched with suggestions in four languages.
- The place name fills in by itself.
1. Open the upload page (screenshot 1)
- In the menu: "upload photos to site".
- You need to be logged in.
- Before, every photo had to be chosen separately. Now you pick them all at once.
- Press "Choose photos" and select as many as you need.
- Or drag the files with the mouse anywhere on the page: "Drop to add" appears.
- Forgot something? Press "Add photos" at the top right, or drag more files.
- On a phone, the gallery or camera opens.
- One card is one observation, that is, one bird.
- Files upload in the background, no waiting.
- At the bottom you see "Uploaded N of M photos" and a progress line.
- If the connection drops, the site retries on its own. If it still fails, there is a "Retry" button.
- While uploading, it is better not to close the page.
- A series of shots of one bird lives in one card.
- The site sorts photos by shooting time and place, but it can be wrong.
- You can fix it with the mouse:
- drag a photo onto another card, and it joins that card's series;
- drag a photo outside the card, onto the "New observation here" zone, and it becomes a separate observation.
- The first photo of a series is marked "Main". To change it, open the shot you want and choose "Make this photo the main one".
- On a phone: the "Actions" menu, and the checkboxes on cards with the "Merge into one series" button.
- Start typing a name and choose from the suggestions.
- You can search in Russian, Kazakh, English and Latin: every suggestion shows all four names.
- At the bottom of the list there is "Full list A–Z", if you would rather pick by eye.
- Not sure which bird it is? Press "For identification".
- Write your guess or details: what it looks like, where it was, how it called.
- Changed your mind? Press "choose species".
- They come from the photo itself, if it has GPS and time.
- If not, the value from the previous observation is used (a chip with a dashed border).
- To change the place, press the chip with the name, and the "Where was it taken" window opens.
- Find the place with search, or drop a pin on the map.
- The name fills in by itself, so you do not have to type every place by hand.
- You can add details if you want.
- The map can be switched to satellite.
- The checkbox at the bottom applies the place to the following observations.
- The date is changed the same way, by pressing the date chip.
- Open the "Actions" menu (three dots in the corner of the photo).
- "Delete observation" removes the whole card with all its photos.
- It does not ask for confirmation, but "Observation deleted" and an "Undo" button appear at the bottom.
- You have 10 seconds: press it, and the observation comes back in the same place.
- After 10 seconds the deletion is final.
- "Delete this photo" removes one shot from a series (available if the series has more than one photo).
- There is no "Undo" here: if you deleted the wrong one, add the photo again.
- Deleting before publishing only affects the upload: nothing appears on the site until you press "Publish".
- The button at the bottom shows how many observations will go.
- It becomes active when all photos are uploaded.
- If a place or date is missing, the chip turns red.
- If there is no species, the site asks whether to send those for identification.
- After publishing you get a list of links to your observations and a choice: "YES upload one more series" or "NO go to the recent uploaded photos".
- We recommend good-quality photos.
- Best size: about 2560 px on the long side, which is the size the site shows.
- Limits: at least 800 px on the long side, and no more than 10 MB.
- Formats: JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC.
- A photo did not upload: "Retry".
- Deleted the wrong observation: press "Undo" right away (you have 10 seconds).
- "Publish" is grey: wait for the upload to finish.
- The place was not found: try another spelling, or drop a pin on the map.
- Nothing helped: write in the comments or to email@example.invalid.
- We changed the map provider.
- The regular map and the satellite now come from new sources.
- The satellite images are more recent.
- I hope this improves the site for you.
- If a map did not open, tell us which browser and which page.
