The warm, sunny day. Trip to Akterek with Gennady Dyakin, Andrei Kovalenko and Raufael Bairashev. Akterek is located in the western part of Zhetizhol ridge (to the west from the Zailijsky Alatau ridge). In the stony and sage-brush foothills we saw pair of Demoiselle Cranes (probably with juveniles), one flown by Black-bellied Sandgrouse, Hobby, two Long-legged Buzzards, Hoopoes, Barn Swallows, Corn Buntings, Red-headed Buntings, Rosy Starlings, Rooks, Isabelline Wheatears, Rollers, Lesser Grey Shrikes, Eurasian Bee-eaters - the usual birds of foothills.
It is possible to get from Akterek to the two gorges. On one of gorges there is the small river with coasts strongly overgrown by bushes and trees. In these riverside groves the many birds inhabit. First of all the most appreciable birds are Black-headed Penduline Tits, broods of which flew on all gorge. Nests of Penduline Tits were visible in many places, sometimes on one branch there are three nests of different seasons - this year, past year and the year before the past. Actively singing Common Nightingales are hearable, but I could see only fledgling of Nightingale. We saw also Golden Orioles, Mistle Thrushes, Blackbirds, Red-rumped Swallows, singing Grey-headed Goldfinches, Rollers, one Wood Pigeon, one Oriental Turtle Dove, Hume's Whitethroats and its fledglings, one adult Golden Eagle. Above on gorge, in the Alpine meadows belt we noticed Meadow Buntings, Linnets, and in rocky bushes many Red-headed Buntings. The most interesting observation (actually the main aim of our trip to this gorge) was the Asian Paradise Flycathcers which also already have fledglings; adult Flycatchers together with broods flew by in bushes and groves. On leaving the gorge I saw also fledgling of Dipper but unfortunately I didn't note species of Dipper.
In the next gorge landscape is dry rocks. Here we saw some singing White-capped Buntings, Red-headed Buntings, Hume's Whitethroats, Rock Nuthatches, many Chukar Partridges, one Long-legged Buzzard, one flying by Steppe Eagle, soaring and perching on bushes Eurasian Bee-eaters (both adults and juveniles) and Red-rumped Swallows, and also one Blue Rock Thrush. In sunset foothills we again ran into the Hobbies, Isabelline Wheatears, Kestrel, Red-headed Buntings, Corn Bunting, large flocks of Rosy Starlings were flying from the steppe zone to gorges, Black-headed Wagtails with juveniles, one Tawny Pipit, the brood of Hoopoes, and singing Great Reed Warbler. And in Akterek we watched Masked Wagtails, one Long-tailed Shrike, some Lesser Grey Shrikes, Mynahs.
